Located in Ara Damansara - NOMINATED TOP 55 CLINICS IN KUALA LUMPUR
Ten years ago, I was the second family physician to set up a clinic in Ara Damansara, Malaysia. Since then, I have treated the community's young and old, proudly serving as your trusted doctor.
As your family physician, I have watched your children grow and our community strengthen. Alongside, I always strive to bring you the highest level of care and to be the kind of doctor you would wish to have looking after you and your family.
My Klinik Patrick's Medical in Ara Damansara is there for you whenever you need medical care. But I want to do more for you than just be a good physician.
I want to foster a better medical profession, with physicians, GP's and doctors you can trust. I want you to feel quality care is available to you without long waiting times and other frustrations. I want a healthier Malaysia and believe that together we can achieve this.
I want to share my story with you, the story of how I became a doctor and why I believe in a better future for us all. Then I want to tell you about that bright future, which begins here and now with me , your humble family physician.
To achieve a prosperous and healthy future we need new pioneer to step forward.
Pioneers like me.
Medicine has been in my family for three generations. My grandfather was a hospital assistant and cafe owner in Kuala- Lumpur. While he wasn't a family physician, he did perform our family's most important action.
My grandfather delivered my father, Alex Gurubatham, himself. The family medicine link was clearly established from the very first moments of my father's life.
My grandfather, after a life of toil, encouraged my father to make the best of himself by succeeding through education. By becoming a physician my father certainly did that.
Rising out of poverty and the brutal trials of the middle of the last century, my father learned no less than four languages, achieved national records in his studies and eventually managed to become a physician after gaining prestigious medical qualifications from Singapore and Great Britain
A qualified anaesthetist, he became one of Malaysia's pioneer doctors, especially in intensive care medicine. A respected and well-known physician, he was also a kind and approachable man, earning an affectionate nickname from his beloved patients; "Dr Guru"
In his hands, everyone was safe. He even saved the life of my pet dog when I was a child. There was little he couldn't do and I always hoped to live up to his achievements as a physician, father and Malaysian community member.
I am proud of my lineage in family medicine. These two men sacrificed much so that I could have the opportunities I had on my journey to become your family physician. From childhood, the belief that I would one day become a doctor too was strongly ingrained in me.
But I didn't walk a straight path to becoming a doctor.Along with strong values, respect and endless drive, my father gave me one more gift, a love for Squash.
Squash gave me a chance to see the world. So, before I could embark on my journey to become a family physician, I had my chance, one squash court at a time.
Prasad Pillai, Malaysian National Squash Team Manager, 1988.
From a young age, I loved Squash. It turned out I was very good at it too and began to draw attention from the age of 11 when I started beating senior players.
From the age of 12 I was off travelling the world with my racket in hand. At that stage, I could only think of being a professional squash player and my dreams of becoming a doctor faded for a while.
My sights were certainly aiming high, and I had the confidence of youth that enabled me to achieve many of aspirations. Head Prefect in both my junior and senior years at school, school sportsman for three consecutive years and the most outstanding student in 1987, all from one of the most reputable schools in Kuala-Lumpur.
During this time, in 1986 aged 16,I was invited to Harvard University in Boston, USA for the Squash International Exchange programme. Selection was based both on exceptional sporting talent but also cultural and intellectual qualities. None of these achievements came easy, but I did achieve them and I believe they are the result of my determination, discipline and dedication.
This was an important time for me. It opened my perspective of what any of us can achieve with enough dedication, focus and drive. This plays a huge role in what I believe that I, a humble family physician, can do for medicine and doctors in Malaysia.
"Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world"
Arthur Schopenhauer
I achieved a lot on the court in those pre-physician days. I was the first Malaysian ever to be seeded at the prestigious British Junior Under 14 tournament, won both the Under-17 and Under 19 titles in Hong Kong on the same day. I was only 14-years old at the time.
At the end of my O levels in 1987, I became Malaysia's professional player. I took the bold decision to give the sport two years of my attention, full time. This was a dedication unheard of in my community at the time.
During my professional career, I was lucky enough to play top players like Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan. I was also proud to be national men's team captain and Malaysia's number one, representing this country around the world. This taught me the leadership qualities I still hold today and taught me that losing was just a stepping stone to success.
In 1988, I was offered a Squash Scholarship to study at the prestigious Harvard University, Boston, USA. This was the opportunity of a lifetime. It seemed my hard work and dedication to the sport was leading me towards a professional career. I even got encouragement from two former world champions.
" I would say that Patrick, at 16, can hold his own with any player of his age. To put it plainly, I was impressed"
"I am particularly impressed by Patrick Gurubatham. A very good player"
But by 1989, I had suffered a couple of injuries that had required surgery. My quest to be a full time squash player stalled. I knew my time on court and in the limelight was over. Strangely, I wasn't dissapointed. I had gained new perspective and was ready to move towards my future as a doctor.
It was time to pursue my studies, join the line of proud physicians in my family and give something back to a world that had been so good to me.
"There is more to life than squash... I have now decided to pursue my studies"
Patrick Gurubatham, 1989
I was offered places to become a family physician at schools of medicine in both Ireland and India.I chose Manipal Academy of Higher Education in India.(MAHE)
I believe a doctor's vocation should be built on humble beginnings, real-life and hard work, no glitz, glamour and ease. In India, I learned to become a physician among great poverty and all the health and social problems that emerge form that social dynamic.
The regular power cuts, 18-hour days, the long distances walking to medical school and the language barriers all helped me. They helped me to become stronger, more determined and more innovative as a doctor.
I learned to adapt, respond effectively and offer the high level of care I would want from my own physician, whatever the conditions.
After gaining my first class physician's degree in India, I jumped straight into the deep-end by spending many years in several major hospitals.
First I did 36 hour shifts as an on-call doctor at Malaysia's busiest hospital, Klang General Hospital. I also spent time in a rural setting, Kuching , Sarawak General Hospital, before three more years in the Emergency Department of Ipoh General Hospital.
In A&E, I learned a crucial skill, rarely seen in family physicians and GP's. I learned to diagnose quickly, confidently and accurately, in a highly pressured environment. These life-saving skills I still carry with me as your family physician just down the road and use every time I need to.
" I am very grateful to Dr Patrick,
he saved me from a stroke. If it wasn't for him, my health certainly would have affected my daily life"
Patient of my Ara Damansara Clinic
I also learned the importance of getting diagnosis achieved quickly. So, I invest in having the latest technology and equipment in my clinic.
With Ultrasound, Xray and other technology vital to being a great physician right here in my clinic. I can bring my hospital knowledge to the benefit of my community, right here in my GP clinic.
Before becoming your family physician, I had one more journey to take before Ara Damansara. Being a community's doctor required wide breadth of knowledge. I wanted to explore a side of medicine I dint know well before feeling ready to wear my GP coat.
I spent the last two of my seven years of government service working at the Psychiatry Hospital Sentosa in Kuching. Here I honed skills that enable me to look beyond the body of my patients and become a family physician with knowledge across a wide range of medical subjects.
And so, with all this knowledge and worldly experience, I moved to Ara Damansara to become your family physician in 2006. But my learning has never stopped.
From nutrition and functional medicine to weight loss therapies and telemedicine, I continue to keep my student-like enthusiasm and constantly develop and refine what it means to be your family doctor.
My father was a pioneer in his medical world and I want to be a pioneer for family physicians. This is not for my own glory, but to improve the reputation and quality of the medical profession in Malaysia and, with it, the health of all Malaysians.
In Malaysia, healthcare is not what it should be and physicians are not trusted as they should be, It is the task of physicians and doctors to rebuild this trust and the reputation of medical care.
My father taught me never to react but to respond. So, here is how I'm going to respond, right here from Ara Damansara.
1) I plan to help raise the standard of GP's and family physicians in Malaysia by creating in my clinic a model for all physicians to aspire to.
2) I want doctors who are more focussed on caring for patients .
3) I want bi-lingual, qualified doctors who can provide high levels of care to every patient. I want every doctor to have a quality bedside manner that reassures their patients.
4) I will only work with knowledgeable and experienced nurses in my clinic, personally selected by me. Every staff member in a clinic, physician or not, should help, not hinder your health.
5) I plan to work with National Squash Associations to mentor young players and bring the sport to more people. I believe Squash can be a major part of Malaysia's healthy future and I plan to be a driving force in making this a reality.
6) By mentoring young Squash players and working with Sports Science and Technology(including cutting edge DNA testing), I am to raise the standard of Squash in Malaysia so that these players can gain access to reputable universities through their talent and dedication to the sport.
7) I will offer my patients the opportunity to learn Basic Life Support training, so everyone feels equipped to help save a life, whether a physician is close by or not.
8) I want to bring the focus of doctors back to the community service and care. My humble beginnings as a physician are what made me the doctor I am today, so I believe every doctor should go through a varied, challenging and real-life training before joining a clinic.
9) I will tirelessly innovate with science and technology to fight the major health problems in our society, like Child Obesity, and the major frustrations you have with GP care in Malaysia. I will soon announce some very exciting innovations I have been working on: innovations that I believe will begin to revolutionise the experience of visiting your Family Physician.
These are NOT just dreams and desires: This is my ACTION PLAN
In the coming months and years, I will unveil numerous innovations that I believe will make your experience of family physicians, GP's and doctors better. Keep an eye out for my solutions that will end long waiting times in your GP clinic, difficulties in finding a good doctor and much more.
